８７年前に、われわれの祖先はこの大陸に新たな国を作り上げました。その国は自由という理念の上に打ち立てられ、全ての人は生まれながらにして平等であるという考えに捧げられていました。

いまわれわれは大きな内戦のさなかにいます。この国が、というより自由という理念の上に打ち立てられ、全ての人は生まれながらにして平等であるという考えに捧げられた国が、永続するかどうかを試されているのです。われわれは、この戦争の激戦の戦場に集まっています。

われわれは、この国が生き永らえるよう、ここで命を投げたした人々にとって、この戦場の一部を最終的な安息の地として捧げるためにやってきました。われわれがこうすべきなのは、まったく正しく適切であります。

しかし、より大きな意味でとらえれば、われわれには捧げることはできません、われわれには呈することはできません、つまりわれわれにはこの地を捧げることはできないのです。勇敢なる者で、生き残ったにせよ、戦死したにせよ、ここで奮闘したものだけが、この土地を捧げてきたのです。われわれの微力では、それにつけ加えたり減じたりすることはできないのです。世界はここでわれわれが言ったことにはたいして注意を払いもしなければ、後世まで記憶することもないでしょう。しかし勇敢なるものがここでなしとげたことは、決して忘れられることはないのです。

ここで戦ったものがこれまで気高く推し進めてきた未完の仕事に、ここで新たに身を捧げるのはむしろ生き残ったわれわれです。ここでわれわれの前に残されている大事業に、ここで身をささげるのはむしろわれわれなのです。その大事業とは、われわれがこれらの名誉の戦死からいよいよ決意をもって、戦死者が全力をもって身を捧げた大義へと身を捧げることです。その大事業とは、これらの戦死者の死を無駄にしないようにと固く誓うことです。その大事業とは、神の庇護のもとにこの国に新たな自由が生まれるようにすることです。その大事業とは、人民の、人民による、人民のための政治をこの地上から滅びないようにすることなのです。

THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS

Address delivered at the dedication of the cemetery at Gettysburg

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle–field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate ― we can not consecrate ― we can not hallow ― this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us ― that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion ― that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain ― that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom ― and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
